Why Hotel Owners Must Speak Up and Show Up in Policy Debates

Summary:

  • Policy decisions directly affect margins and operations

  • Owner voices help shape fair regulations  and protect profitability

  • AAHOA’s influence grows when members stay engaged

  • Advocacy becomes stronger through real stories and steady involvement

  • Showing up today protects opportunities for the next generation

After many years in hospitality, I have learned that what happens in government offices can shape the daily work of hotel ownership. Decisions made in committee rooms can affect hiring, investments, and the long-term health of our businesses. This is why hotel owners need to stay involved. When we speak up, lawmakers hear how their choices affect real hotels and real families.

Policy Decisions Shape Profitability

Every regulation has an effect. Business taxes, short-term rental laws, franchise protections, and labor regulations all influence performance, cash flow, and our livelihood. When owners take part in these conversations, we help leaders understand the true impact of their decisions.

I saw this during the Franchise Practices Act effort in New Jersey. Owners came together, shared their stories, and explained why fair treatment in contracts matters. That effort helped move fairness forward. It was successful because owners took the time to be present and clear.

When owners join policy discussions, lawmakers remember our stories. This is one way we protect our teams, our margins, and the future of our businesses.

AAHOA’s Strength Comes From Its Members

AAHOA was built on unity. When members participate, our voice grows stronger. Regional meetings, Town Halls, and visits with local representatives show policymakers how hotel ownership works in real life.

Our goal is honest partnership. When we show how many jobs we create and how much we reinvest in our communities, leaders gain a better view of our industry and our roles within it. Hospitality supports millions  of families, and that message becomes clear when owners show up.

AAHOA provides the platform. Owners provide the power behind it.

Leading Through Steady Participation

Advocacy takes time and effort. Many owners prefer to work quietly, yet our involvement matters. When owners speak, leaders listen. Over time, this steady presence helps shape laws that protect fairness and profitability.

We also have a responsibility to the next generation. They should inherit an industry that is stronger and more secure. Staying engaged helps make that possible.

Let us keep showing up for progress. Our voice is strongest when we use it together.
